Why Is Frog Spawn Dangerous to Dogs?

Toxicity Risks

Many amphibians, including frogs and toads, produce toxins as a defense mechanism. While not all frog spawn is harmful, some species contain mild toxins that can cause vomiting, drooling, or gastrointestinal upset in dogs if ingested, especially in large volumes.

Bacteria and Parasites

Stagnant water where frog spawn is found often harbours bacteria and parasites that can lead to infections or digestive issues. Drinking contaminated water increases the risk of illness.

Toad Spawn Is More Dangerous

While frog spawn is usually milder in toxicity, toad spawn can be much more dangerous. Toads produce bufotoxins, which can cause severe drooling, foaming at the mouth, vomiting, seizures, and even heart complications. It’s best to assume all spawn could pose a risk and keep your dog away.

Signs Your Dog Has Ingested Frog Spawn

  • Excessive drooling
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Seizures (in severe cases)

If you notice these symptoms after your dog has been near a pond, contact your vet immediately.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe

  • Supervise your dog around ponds, puddles, and marshy areas.
  • Provide fresh water to prevent them from drinking from unknown sources.
  • Train a strong “leave it” command to prevent curiosity from turning into a health risk.
  • Rinse your dog’s mouth, taking care not to force the water down their throat, and keep a close eye on them.
  • If you're unsure if they came into contact with the jelly-like substance, having charcoal treats on hand can help absorb some of the toxins.

If in doubt, always contact your vet!
