5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer
1. Frozen Treats for the Win 🍦🐾
Frozen treats help regulate body temperature and double as enrichment.
- Ice cube trays filled with Goats milk or bone broth
- Frozen fruit like blueberries or watermelon (no seeds!)
- Stuffing a Kong with natural yoghurt or wet food and popping it in the freezer
2. Cool Down with a Damp Towel or Cooling Mat 🧊
Dogs cool from the bottom up, so lying on something cool can help a lot. A cooling mat or a damp towel on the floor gives them a place to rest and lower their body temperature. (Stormy15 will get you 15% off the Pup Chic website).
3. Adjust Walk Times ☀️🚶♂️
Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening, when pavement temperatures are cooler and the sun isn't at its strongest. Test the ground with your hand, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws! It's set to be a hot summer!
4. Offer Plenty of Fresh Water 💧
Hydration is key. Make sure your dog has constant access to clean, cool water, both at home and on walks. If you're out and about, bring a collapsible bowl and a bottle just for them. You can even add a few ice cubes to their bowl on hotter days. (Stormy10 will get you 10% off the fetch website).
5. Create Shade & Airflow 🌳
If your dog’s spending time outside, make sure they have access to shade and a breezy spot to lie down. Indoors, keep curtains drawn during peak heat and use a fan to create airflow; some dogs even enjoy lying in front of it!
Bonus Tip: Know the signs of heatstroke—excessive panting, drooling, red gums, vomiting, or wobbling. If you spot these, move your dog to a cooler place immediately and contact your vet.
